Dr. Fleury went on CTV Morning Live with Mike Ciona to talk about healthy breakfast foods that’ll give your brain a boost. She explained what lots of us are getting wrong about breakfast and how we can fix it.

The Problem with Breakfast

The problem with most breakfast foods is that they’re high in three things that don’t do your brain any favours throughout the day.

Unhealthy Breakfast Elements:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Sugars
  • Caffeine

If you eat foods in the morning that are high in carbohydrates or sugars, by the afternoon (or even by mid-morning), you’ll find yourself lost in a fog, craving caffeine and other stimulants.

Healthy Breakfasts

Dr. Fleury says that by balancing your blood sugar with a more balanced breakfast, you’ll enable your brain to work better.

To make breakfasts healthier, Dr. Fleury recommends ditching the carbohydrates and sugars and instead focusing on four main elements.

Four Main Elements of a Healthy Breakfast:

  1. Protein
  2. Fibers
  3. Greens
  4. Healthy Fats

Healthy Coffee

But don’t worry, having a healthy breakfast doesn’t mean you have to ditch your morning cup of coffee. Dr. Fleury shared her own recipe for what she calls Bulletproof Coffee.

The beverage includes (in addition to coffee, of course) healthy fats such as butter instead of sugar and cream. It also includes protein in the form of collagen powder.

Dr. Fleury’s Bulletproof Coffee recipe turns coffee into part of the solution rather than part of the problem, giving you the opportunity to stabilize your blood sugar with your morning cup of joe.
