Winter – it sure looks like it is here to stay!

Fall was so beautiful and mild this year, but I think it’s time to accept its passing and get out those winter coats.  Although I do love the snow (makes it feel festive), one thing I do not love about winter (besides the cold) is how dry my skin gets.  Between the cold air outside and the hot dry air inside, my hands and face often look like parchment by the time winter is over.

What is the Best Moisturizer?

The trouble I always have when it comes to keeping my skin moisturized during the winter is which lotion to choose.  Often the ones that work the best have ingredients I would rather not put on my skin.  So imagine my excitement when Dr. Fleury gave me a jar of the most beautiful, hydrating, non-greasy, all-natural lotion I had ever come across.  When she told me she had made it herself, I hounded her until she shared her recipe with me.  Now I make moisturizer myself and it’s the only thing I need to keep my skin happy all winter.

This recipe for homemade moisturizer is quite simple once you have all the ingredients.  It is a two-step, overnight process, but it’s worth the wait – trust me!!  All of the ingredients can be found at your local health food store or online so stock up and get your blender out.  Your skin will thank you for it!

Rosemary’s Famous Face Cream (from Herbal Healing for Women)

Group I Ingredients

  • ¾ cup grape seed oil (Other natural oils such as apricot and almond oil can be used, but grape seed oil is the lightest and least oily and therefore the best suited for most teenagers’ skin)
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil and/or cocoa butter
  • ½- 1 tsp grated beeswax

Instructions

  • Melt the beeswax over very low heat, then stir in the other oils and mix well.
  • Pour into a blender and let sit on counter overnight to let it come completely to room temperature.

Group II Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup distilled water
  • 1/3 cup aloe vera gel
  • 1-2 drops essential oils for scent (optional)

Instructions

  • Blend Group II ingredients in a glass measuring cup, then turn the blender on and slowly drizzle  the Group II ingredients as the blender mixes the Group I ingredients.  You may have to stop and start the blender a few times as you are blending in the liquid.
  • You should be seeing a creamy, white, rich looking cream.
  • Store in a glass jar in the fridge.
