Back in the Saddle

Well, three months has gone by awfully fast, but here I am, ready to dive back into naturopathic medicine.  It was a fantastic summer spent at the park and the pool with my toddler, Micah, and our new baby boy, Jackson.  Fall is clearly here to stay, and with the change in season comes a change in my routine.  I am back in the office and ready to get back into practice.  I have some new office hours (see below) and also a fresh outlook on health and wellness.  Being home with my boys for those three months really taught me the power of being present.

When I got pregnant with Jackson, I had no idea how I was going to manage two kids under two once he arrived.  But it turns out the trick is to just be in the moment and take it one step at a time.  Two screaming kids at the same time?  Take a deep breath, and tend to one first, then the other.  And keep taking those deep breaths.  One child waking up just as the other one is going to sleep?  Take a deep breath, bring them both into bed with you, and enjoy some snuggles.  Eventually, if you practice enough, it becomes very natural to stay with what is happening and just enjoy the moment – even the difficult ones!

I also learned a lot about letting go and going with the flow, which really goes hand in hand with being present.  When Micah was born, I had him on a strict feeding and sleeping schedule and heaven forbid anything should disrupt that routine.  It worked at the time, but it’s not been practical with Jackson this time around.  I don’t have as much time or energy to do all of that again.  So we just do what works and let the rest go.  No longer do I worry that breastfeeding him to sleep may cause him to become dependent on it.  Or if he sleeps in my bed or his own.  As long as he goes to sleep and eats when he needs it, it’s all good.  I can let the rest go.  I’ve learned that when you have a lot on your plate, the trick is to pick a few things that matter and let the rest take care of itself.

Having children has been a very humbling and enriching experience for me.  I truly believe that our kids are here to teach us as much (if not more) as we teach them.  I hope to bring these experiences with me as I start up my practice and get back into my naturopathic doctor shoes.  I’m looking forward to seeing all my patients again soon for a fall check up!
